The Walton Raider Swim & Dive teams competed in the state championship meet at Georgia Tech last Saturday with the girls finishing as the state runner-up and the boys placing 16th.
Junior Elizabeth Isakson led the way for the girls with runner-up finishes in both the 200 individual medley (IM) (2:04.10) and 100 breast stroke (1:02.51) events. Junior Lily Alderman finished 3rd in the 100 backstroke (58.29) and 11th in the 200 IM. In the 500 freestyle, the Lady Raiders placed four swimmers in the top 12, with sophomore Sydney Starnes placing 3rd (4:57.44), junior Morgan Wimberly 5th (5:02.66), junior Annalia Jansons 6th (5:08.18), and junior Caroline Guichard 12th (5:15.20). In addition, Jansons placed 8th (1:54.70) and Wimberly 10th (1:55.52) in the 200 freestyle and Starnes finished 9th (2:08.74), Alderman 11th (2:10.61), and Samantha Kiel 15th (2:12.49) in the 200 IM. Other individual placers included freshman Lauren Willis in the 50 freestyle (24.96) and senior Emma Thorogood 15th in the 100 backstroke). The Lady Raiders also scored big points in the relays, finishing 2nd in both the 200 medley relay (Alderman, Isakson, Kiel, and Jansons) in 1:47.04 and the 400 freestyle relay (Jansons, Starnes, Alderman, Isakson) in 3:31.93 as well as 8th in the 200 freestyle relay (Thorogood, Willis, freshman Avery Deak, and Starnes) in 1:41.75. As a team, the Lady Raiders scored 320 points, finishing second to Lambert High School by a mere 4 points.
The boys were led by the 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Liam Long, sophomore Daniel Michaeli, freshman John Panessa, and junior Connor Snow, who placed 8th in 3:16.53, and sophomore Tyler Hoard, who placed 5th in the 1 meter diving competition, scoring 513.65 points.
