Both the boys and girls cross country teams competed in the state championship meet in Carrollton on Saturday, 11/2, with the boys finishing in first place and the girls placing third to join the boys on the podium. The state championship was the sixth in program history for the boys, but first since 1986.
Connor Old and Zac Shaffer led the Raiders to the finish, placing 5th in 16:18 and 7th in 16:21, respectively. Other top scorers for the Raiders were Sam Balboa, who finished 14th in 16:46, Brick Conway, 30th in 17:07, and Evan Sommer, 44th in 17:18. The Raiders’ total of 98 points beat runner-up Lambert by 18 points.
For the girls, Sarah Burwell led the way with a fourth place finish in 19:31. Isabela Bazan followed with an 18th place finish in 20:21, Hannah Walker clocked a 20:24 to finish 19th, Ellen Chamberlain ran a 20:34 to place 30th, and Arden Keeter followed in 32nd place in 20:43. The Lady Raiders totaled 99 points to edge West Forsyth by one point for their third place finish.
