Tia Jones, a sophomore track & field athlete, has been busy the last few months. In May, Tia led the Lady Raider track & field team to a 7th place finish at the GHSA State Meet, winning the 100 hurdles in 13.40 seconds after setting a state record of 13.20 seconds in the preliminary rounds. In addition, she placed second in both the 200 meter dash and the long jump, scoring a total of 26 points toward the Lady Raiders’ total of 33.5.
But that was just a warm up for her summer.
In June, Tia travelled to California to compete in the USATF Junior Nationals where she placed second in her signature event, the 100 hurdles, dropping her time to 13.05. Click here to read more. Then in July, she made the trip to Poland to represent the United States in the IAAF U20 World Championships in Poland, where she won a bronze medal in the 100 hurdles, again dropping her time to a blistering 12.89, and gold as a member of the 4 X 100 meter relay team.
And to top off her whirlwind summer, Tia was invited to attend the Olympic Games as one of four rising stars in American sports, where she was mentored by a former Olympic athlete and walked in the footsteps of the athletes competing in the Games this year.
Congratulations on the great summer season, Tia!
